Nigerian centre-back Rabiu Afolabi admits that he would love an opportunity to star in the English Premier League having been linked with an end of season switch to Aston Villa and Stoke City.

The 28-year-old, who currently plays in France for Sochaux, was nearly snapped up by Martin O’Neill during the January transfer window but his valuation saw the deal fall through.

There should be no such problems at the end of the season as Afolabi will be available on a free transfer having seen out his contract in Ligue 1.

"I have always wanted to play for a Premier League club, to be linked with Villa is very good, but nothing is done yet," he told English reporters.

"Stoke City? They are a good team; however they need to be in the Premier League, so let's wait until the summer.

"I can't say anything yet, let's wait and see."
