Ghana’s Asamoah Gyan continued his recovery from injury with two goals at the weekend to push him among the French league’s top goal scorers. Gyan scored inside 20 seconds as Stade Rennes romped to a 4-0 away win over bottom-placed Grenoble on Saturday night.

Gyan also scored in the second half to complete the romp by converting a penalty. There was also a goal for Senegal defender Kader Mangane in a match that twice had to be stopped because of crowd violence.

The win moved Rennes to fourth place in Ligue 1, behind the traditional trio of powerhouses of French football, Bordeaux, Lyon and Marseille.

Bordeaux, 2-0 winners at promoted Boulogne on Saturday, top the 
table with 16 points from six games, two ahead of Lyon and Olympique
Marseille.


Senegal international Mamadou Naing scored a superb individual goal as Marseille beat Montpellier 4-2 on Saturday. His compatriot Souleymane Diawara added the fourth in a night of triumph for the two Senegalese.

Montpellier had a late penalty converted by Souleymane Camara the former Senegal internatial who was part of their 2002 World Cup squad.

Tunisia international Fahid Ben Khalfallah scored the last goal in an impressive 5-2 win for mid-table Valenciennes at Sochaux. Nancy suffered a 3-1 defeat at Lorient on Saturday despite a goal from Cameroon’s paul Alo’O Efoulou. His conslation effort came in stoppage time at the end of the game.
